The Way of King David
Psalm 6:4, 7 Daily Rhythms to Walk in Deep Relationship with God
One of the most impactful things I’ve done as a dad—besides teaching my daughters about Jesus and hearing them quote verses or sing worship songs—is helping them talk about their feelings. We even have a feelings chart we pull out when they’re struggling to express what’s going on inside.
So far, as soon as each of them turned two and could articulate emotions, both said the same thing like: “I feel frustrated.” It’s the cutest thing to hear—but in those moments, I try to stay serious, listen well, and receive their emotions with love.
It reminds me of David. Throughout the Psalms, David pours out his heart—every raw, unfiltered emotion. And what does he get in return? The warm, consistent response of a loving Father. Just like I try to give my daughters.
That got me thinking about the way of David. In Hebrews, we’re challenged to look up to the great men and women of faith—not to idolize them, but to admire and imitate them if doing so brings us closer to God. Faith is about relationship. So why wouldn’t we follow the footsteps of someone who knew how to walk with God in every season?
So Here are 7 things that David did to be called a label I cherish, a man after God’s own heart:
THE WAY OF DAVID
7 Daily Rhythms to Walk in Deep Friendship with God
“I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” —Acts 13:22
1. POUR OUT YOUR HEART (Prayer)
David talked to God about everything—his pain, dreams, doubts, and joys. He wasn’t polished, he was present. He was real and unashamed of His emotions.
Daily Practice: You may not have had the platform to express yourself, but it is not too late to start learning! Write or pray one honest, unfiltered paragraph to God. No fluff. Just heart. Don’t leave anything out, including what you think about Him. Remember, He sees it anyway.
“Turn, Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love.” —Psalm 6:4
2. REMEMBER WHAT GOD HAS DONE (Reflection)
David recalled God’s past faithfulness to fuel future faith.
Daily Practice: Write down one moment where God came through—past or present. Spend time reflecting on that moment, praising God for it. I have been listening to rain instrumental recently — because I love rain and love instrumental music (helps me focus on Him).
“I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works.” —Psalm 143:5
3. SING EVEN WHEN YOU’RE STRUGGLING (Worship)
David sang in caves. He worshiped in tears. He danced in joy.
Daily Practice: Sing one worship song aloud. Continue thinking you are the next American Idol in the shower, but bring that off-key voice out of the holy waters and into the public. It is not a performance. It is a posture to the Lord.
“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” —Psalm 34:1
4. REPENT QUICKLY (Humility)
David didn’t hide long when he messed up. He ran back to God. I spoke about this to someone yesterday. The more I have matured spiritually, the faster I have become at asking for forgiveness. Yes, I am proud of that!
Daily Practice: Ask God to search your heart. Write down one sin or attitude to surrender. Confess it and move forward. Oh, when it tries to come up tomorrow, confess again and move forward.
“Create in me a pure heart, O God.” —Psalm 51:10
5. INQUIRE OF THE LORD (Guidance)
David didn’t just do—he asked. He waited. He moved with God, often, only when God moved.
Daily Practice: Ask God one specific question about your day, decisions, or relationships. Write what you sense in prayer or scripture.
“David inquired of the Lord, ‘Shall I go?’ And the Lord said…” —1 Samuel 23:2
6. WRITE IT DOWN (Record)
David journaled through songs, prayers, and pain. It kept him rooted.
Daily Practice: Keep a running log of what God is showing you—even just a line. I write them and date it in a folder labeled, “Hearing the voice of God.” And now I am even recording it on YouTube for all of you to see. By the way, I labeled the folder that way because it reminds me of how intimate God is in my life.
“Write down the revelation and make it plain.” —Habakkuk 2:2
7. WALK IN FEARLESS OBEDIENCE (Action)
David feared God more than man. He obeyed, even when it was hard.
Daily Practice: Ask, “What’s one thing God’s asking me to do today?” Then do it—even if it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” —Psalm 27:1
THE NEVER FINISHED CHALLENGE: Start Today!
Start Today: 7 Days of the Way of David.
Each morning:
Wake up early.
Go on a prayer walk or run.
Do all 7 rhythms (keep it simple: a line, a song, a step).
End your day with worship and gratitude.
Repeat for 7 days.
Then ask:
Did I feel closer to God?
What did He show me?
Where did I feel more like David—more alive, more bold, more surrendered?
What does today say about God?
God is all-knowing, unconditionally loving, and incomprehensibly merciful—to me.
Me. A scrappy, unfocused sinner, redeemed by the blood of Jesus.
He not only made a way for me to rest in His loving arms, but He also etched out a path for me to be used for His glory.
Words will never fully capture the depth of His hesed—His covenantal, never-failing love. Yet He still pours it out freely, never requiring us to explain it, just to receive it.
What a Father. What a Friend. What a King.
Thank you, Jesus.
