The Mind Led by the Flesh is Death; the Mind Led by the Spirit is Life.
CHRISTmas reminds me of what should govern my mind.
“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace” (Romans 8:6).
Merry CHRISTmas! 🎄✨ I hope and pray your day has been filled with joy and hope. My prayer is that Christ remains at the forefront of your thoughts today. In Him, we find true joy and everlasting peace!
Romans 8:6 spoke deeply to me this morning, offering insights that I believe will empower you. Stick around for my Never Finished Challenge at the end—it has the potential to transform your life!
First, let’s dive into the word governed in this verse.
In Greek, it is φρόνημα (phronēma).
• Definition: This word refers to the mindset, attitude, or inner orientation of a person. It’s not just intellectual thought but a deeper, driving disposition that shapes choices and behavior.
Usage in Romans 8:6:
• φρόνημα τῆς σαρκὸς: A mindset oriented toward the flesh (our sinful nature).
• φρόνημα τοῦ πνεύματος: A mindset oriented toward the Spirit (God’s transformative presence).
Context and Meaning in Romans 8:6:
Paul contrasts two governing mindsets and their outcomes:
1. The Mindset of the Flesh (phronēma tēs sarkos):
• What it means: This mindset is dominated by self-centered desires, worldly values, and rebellion against God.
• Outcome: Death (thanatos)—spiritual separation from God and, ultimately, eternal condemnation.
• Why: The flesh inherently opposes God and cannot align with His purposes (Romans 8:7).
2. The Mindset of the Spirit (phronēma tou pneumatos):
• What it means: This mindset is transformed by the Holy Spirit, characterized by submission to God’s will, and focused on His purposes.
• Outcome: Life and Peace (zōē kai eirēnē):
• Life: Spiritual vitality now and eternal life with God.
• Peace: Reconciliation with God and an inner sense of harmony and well-being.
So how do we live a life of Peace?
Here’s my Never Finished Challenge to help you cultivate a Spirit-led life:
1. Immerse Yourself in God’s Word:
• Follow the principle of first fruits—offer the first part of your day to God. Spend time with Him proactively to align your heart and mind with His Kingdom.
• I also tithe my drive: every time I get in the car, I listen to audible Scripture. My favorite is Streetlights Audio Bible—it’s engaging and impactful!
2. Cultivate an Ongoing Conversation with the Spirit:
• Set alarms throughout the day as reminders to pause and pray.
• Practice “prayer darts”: when you see something or think of someone, send up a quick prayer on their behalf.
3. Practice Spirit-Led Discernment:
• Replace the desires of the flesh with God’s desires. Instead of reacting in fear or sin, lean into patience, trust, and obedience.
4. Foster Community and Accountability:
• Surround yourself with others who will encourage and hold you accountable on your journey. You cannot do this alone!
5. Focus on the Fruits of the Spirit:
• Let the Holy Spirit cultivate His fruits in your life (Galatians 5:22-23).
Bonus: Encouraging Scriptures to Meditate On
• Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
• Galatians 5:25: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
• Philippians 4:8: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right… think about such things.”
What does this say about God?
This verse reminds us of God’s selfless and unconditional transformative power. He mercifully and lovingly desires to renew our minds, lead us into life and peace, and free us from the grip of sin. Today shows me that God is faithful and willing to dwell within us through His Spirit, giving us the strength to live in alignment with His will. Thank you, Jesus!
