The Edge of Greatness
The most signficant transformation happens on the edge.
“In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, ‘So shall your descendants be (Romans 4:18 NASB).’”
Paul’s argument in Romans 4 emphasizes the gift of faith rather than the perfect works of Abraham. To the Jews, Abraham was a revered, almost godlike figure. By highlighting God’s perfect promises fulfilled through an imperfect man, despite Abraham’s errors in actions, and focusing instead on his belief, Paul establishes righteousness as being through faith. This standard, rooted in faith, has been foundational since Father Abraham!
I love that Abraham’s belief came despite the hopelessness of his situation. The NASB beautifully articulates this with the phrase, ‘In hope against hope he believed’—in other words, ‘against all odds.’ In my journey with God, I’ve discovered that the most transformational faith often emerges when I’m standing on the edge, facing what seems like a hopeless situation. Yet, because of His promises and the work of the Holy Spirit, I can still choose to believe. It is in those moments of faith, against all odds, that God’s power becomes most evident.
Here’s what I know to be true about you: you are either on the edge or will face moments of being on the edge. Take heart today—yesterday’s actions do not define today’s promise, as long as you choose to keep believing. Through this constant belief and alignment under the authority of God, we become more like Christ. In this alignment, God’s miracles, provision, and authority become abundantly available in our assignment, even when we are on the edge.
Never Finished Challenge:
What do you focus on when you are on the edge of life? Where does your attention go? In the past, my attention often turned to sin. There is still work for God to do in me, but the more time I’ve spent with Him, my trust has grown. And on the edge, trust is key!
Today, take time to reflect on your failed actions. You’ll conclude—or should conclude—every time- that the root of those failures lies in not fully trusting God’s provision, protection, promises, or His ability to use every situation for good (Romans 8:28).
Before you open the Bible today, ask God to help you trust Him more deeply. Trust is the foundation for walking with Him, especially when life feels on the edge.
What does this say about God?
If God’s will depended solely on our actions, it would never come to pass. I find it incredibly comforting and empowering that He chooses to use us despite our sins. His grace is such a precious gift that I get to receive every day. Thank You, Jesus!
