Open My Eyes

“Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your Law.”
— Psalm 119:18
“The psalmist didn’t need new revelation; he needed to see the revelation that was already given. He didn’t need new eyes; he needed to see more clearly with the eyes he already had.” — David Guzik
As we close out our week of learning, How to Read the Bible, I want to challenge you to approach Scripture with the right heart so that we will stop being the blind Christian that leads the blind Christian.
Before you read, ask God to open your eyes—not for something new, but to see what He’s already revealed. The context of this verse is the Torah, but as you will see below, we can apply it today.
As you sit daily with the Lord: pray, read, journal, and pray. When a verse, phrase, or word stands out to you, slow down. Observe it intentionally.
Ask:
Who was this written to?
What was happening at the time?
What does this reveal about Jesus?
Then, consider how it applies to your life today.
One method I use often is the SOAP method:
S—Scripture: Write down the verse or passage that stands out.
O—Observation: Note what you notice—words, themes, repeated ideas, or commands.
A—Application: Ask how this truth applies to your life right now.
P—Prayer: Respond to God in prayer, asking Him to shape your heart and guide your obedience.
The Same Prayer, Fulfilled in Christ
Psalm 119:18 was a cry for spiritual sight. The New Testament shows that God answered that prayer through Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Luke 24:45 says, “Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” After His resurrection, Jesus did for His disciples what the psalmist longed for—He opened their spiritual eyes to see Him in every page.
Ephesians 1:17–18 says, “That the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.” Paul prays that believers would see with Spirit-given clarity what God has already revealed.
2 Corinthians 3:16–18 reminds us that when we turn to Christ, “the veil is taken away.” The Spirit removes the blindness so we can behold His glory.
We don’t need new revelation—just new sight. The Holy Spirit still opens eyes today so that what was once ink on a page becomes fire in the heart.
Never Finished Challenge
This week, choose one passage and practice the SOAP method.
Pray, “Lord, open my eyes,” then read slowly. Observe, apply, and pray until His Word moves from your head to your heart.
Because when God opens your eyes, you’ll find that the Bible isn’t a textbook—it’s a meeting place with the living Christ.
How do you sit daily with the wonders of Scripture? What helps you stay present, alert, and expectant as you meet with God in His Word?
Thank you for sharing this if you found it encouraging!
