Are You Spiritually Blind?
A Hard Question from Isaiah 29
Many of us assume we see clearly, but what if we’re actually spiritually blind? What if we go through life thinking we’re walking with God, but in reality, we’re just stumbling in the dark? I can, with certainty, say I have been spiritually blind as a Christian. Furthermore, I face opportunities, especially in my information-rich and pleasure-seeking free country, to become spiritually blind.
In Isaiah 29, God confronts His people about their spiritual blindness—a blindness that they didn’t even recognize. And the scary part? We can be just like them.
Signs of Spiritual Blindness (Isaiah 29)
Here are nine warning signs of spiritual blindness I read through David Guziks commentary from the Blue Letter Bible App and what they lead to. Together, let’s review these carefully—do any of them describe you?
1. Spiritual Blindness is Caused by Pride.
📖 Isaiah 29:14 – “The wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.”
When we think we know better than God, we stop listening to Him.
Pride makes us unteachable, unwilling to see our faults. If you aren’t growing…well, you are dying.
🔥 Reflection: Ask yourself—when was the last time I let God correct me? Have I ignored His conviction?
2. Spiritual Blindness Will Bring Us Low.
📖 Isaiah 29:4 – “Brought low, you will speak from the ground.”
Blindness leads to a fall—whether morally, spiritually, or even physically.
God humbles the proud so they can see their need for Him.
🔥 Reflection: What area of my life has been shaken recently? Could God be trying to get my attention?
3. Spiritual Blindness Leads to Spiritual Drunkenness.
📖 Isaiah 29:9 – “Be stunned and amazed; blind yourselves and be blind! Be drunk, but not from wine.”
Spiritual blindness distorts our moral judgment—we can’t see right from wrong.
It makes us numb to God’s truth, just like alcohol numbs the senses.
🔥 Reflection: Have I become numb to sin? Am I making excuses for things I once knew were wrong?
4. Spiritual Blindness Leads to Spiritual Sleep.
📖 Isaiah 29:10 – “For the Lord has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep.”
When we ignore God long enough, our hearts fall asleep to His voice.
We may go to church, read the Bible, even pray—but feel nothing.
🔥 Reflection: When was the last time I felt truly convicted or moved by God’s presence?
5. Spiritual Blindness Leads to Spiritual Illiteracy.
📖 Isaiah 29:11-12 – "For you this whole vision is nothing but words sealed in a scroll... they cannot understand it."
People can hear the Word of God but not understand it because their hearts are hardened.
Have you ever read Scripture and felt like it doesn’t speak to you?
🔥 Reflection: Am I truly seeking to understand God’s Word, or just reading out of obligation?
6. Spiritual Blindness Causes Hypocrisy.
📖 Isaiah 29:13 – “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”
We can say all the right Christian words but live a different reality.
Jesus quoted this verse when condemning the Pharisees (Matthew 15:8-9).
🔥 Reflection: Is my faith real? Do I love God, or do I just go through the motions?
7. Spiritual Blindness Makes Us Think God Doesn’t See Us.
📖 Isaiah 29:15 – “Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, ‘Who sees us? Who will know?’”
When we’re spiritually blind, we act like God isn’t watching.
We justify secret sins, forgetting that nothing is hidden from God.
🔥 Reflection: What’s one thing I do in secret that I wouldn’t if I truly believed God saw me?
8. Spiritual Blindness Makes Us Deny God as Creator.
📖 Isaiah 29:16 – “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘You did not make me’?”
Spiritual blindness leads people to reject God’s authority over their lives.
We resist being molded by Him, thinking we know best.
🔥 Reflection: Am I truly surrendered to God’s plan, or do I fight for control?
9. Spiritual Blindness is Cured Through Humility and God's Restoration.
📖 Isaiah 29:18 – “In that day the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see.”
The only cure for spiritual blindness is God’s intervention.
He restores the humble but opposes the proud (James 4:6).
🔥 Reflection: Will I humble myself before God today and ask Him to restore my sight?
Never Finished Challenge—How to Correct Spiritual Blindness
If any of these signs describe you, don’t ignore it. Here’s how to break free:
1️⃣ Pray for God to Open Your Eyes.
📖 “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” (Psalm 119:18)
🙏 Prayer: "Lord, if I am blind to anything, open my eyes. Show me where I need to change."
2️⃣ Immerse Yourself in God’s Word.
📖 “The entrance of Your words gives light.” (Psalm 119:130)
📖 Action: Read one chapter a day for a week—starting with Isaiah 29, John 9, or Matthew 15.
3️⃣ Seek Community + Accountability.
📖 “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” (Proverbs 27:6)
👥 Action: Ask a mentor or friend, “Do you see any spiritual blindness in me?”
4️⃣ Take One Bold Step of Obedience.
📖 “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” (James 1:22)
🚀 Action: Ask God: “What step do You want me to take today?” Then, do it.
Final Thought: Are You Willing to See?
Jesus came to give sight to the blind (Luke 4:18). But He also said, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.” (John 9:41)
Are you ready to admit where you’ve been blind?
Are you willing to let God open your eyes?
🔥 Drop a comment: What’s one area where God is opening your eyes today? Let’s challenge and encourage each other!
What does today say about God?
God does not hide the way out. Instead, He exposes every dead end and obstacle so that we can freely pursue Him. He knew exactly where Adam and Eve were in the garden (Genesis 3:9), yet He still asked, “Where are you?” Because of Jesus Christ, He asks me the same question today, drawing me closer to Him for His perfect pleasure and His eternal plan.
Thank You, Jesus!
