Are You Hungry and Thirsty?
Day 1—The Eternal Power of God’s Word
Psalm 119:89 | Matthew 24:35 | Colossians 1:16–17
Name of God this week: Jehovah Shalom: Peace remains because His Word endures.
Christ, the Living Word, holds all things together—including your peace.
Before we talk about the eternal power of God’s Word, remember—it’s not just spiritually true but historically reliable.
Historians apply three tests to ancient writings: manuscript evidence, internal consistency, and external confirmation. The Bible surpasses every ancient text in all three. As GotQuestions.org notes, “No other work from ancient history comes close to matching the reliability and accuracy of the Bible.”
When Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away,” He wasn’t speaking poetry. He was declaring eternal truth we can trust with our lives.
The Psalmist knew that the words of God never return void. He declared their eternality, their action, and their power.
Three Life-Giving Truths About the Eternal Power of God’s Word
First, The Word That Stands Forever
Jesus said in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.”
There’s no expiration date on what God speaks—or on what His people give back to Him in obedience to His Word.
Why does this matter?
For years, I thought that once I reached heaven, I’d finally know everything about God. But if I knew everything, that would make me God—and contrary to popular opinion, I am not omniscient.
The good news is this: there is no end to discovering who God is. His glory is an ocean without a shore. As His children, we get to bathe in that truth—immersed in water that heals, refreshes, and awakens more profound love for Him every day. This isn’t a feel-good Hallmark moment; it’s a transforming reality that produces actions beyond our imagination or human ability.
When we open Scripture, we aren’t just reading ancient words. We are encountering the same voice that spoke light into darkness. The same Christ who created all things and in whom all things hold together (Colossians 1:16–17) now speaks through His Word to recreate us. Every time His Word enters our hearts, it realigns what was broken and renews what was misaligned. His voice doesn’t just reach our minds—it radically and transformationally shifts the very fabric of our being. The Word that created the universe still sustains us, cell by cell, thought by thought, moment by moment.
Second, the Word That Bears Fruit.
The Word of God produces actions not of this world. Galatians 5 calls them the fruit of the Spirit.
Think of an apple tree. It begins as a seed, reaches toward the sun, and eventually bears fruit. The tree doesn’t compare itself to the orange tree beside it or curse God for its apples. It simply grows, nourished by light. No one can fully explain how those apples form—it’s a miracle of design.
So it is with us. As we spend time in the presence of the Son—reading His Word, worshiping, obeying—we begin to bear fruit that isn’t our own. The world tastes and sees the goodness of God through us. In that process, we’re being transformed into Christ’s likeness for His glory and for others to encounter Him.
Finally, the Word That Satisfies the Soul.
I’ve read every leadership and self-help book I could find. Many of them offered good ideas, but it was like being a thirsty deer on the way to the brook—then getting distracted by a few drops of rain in a cup. My thirst was never quenched.
When I finally turned back to the Word and made it my daily pursuit, I reached the brook. There, my soul found not just a sip but living water—enough to sustain, strengthen, and invite me back again and again.
Never Finished Challenge
This week, meditate on Colossians 1:15–20. Read it slowly each day and write one phrase that stands out. Then ask:
How is Christ holding my life together today?
What part of me needs to be realigned by His Word?
Where do I see His creative power bringing new life?
Let His Word speak—not as words on a page, but as the living voice of the Creator who still sustains your breath and rebuilds your heart.
Prayer
“Jesus, You are the Word through whom all things were made. Speak into every part of me—body, mind, and spirit. Realign what’s broken, restore what’s weary, and let Your life flow through me for Your glory.”
But James, you might say, “I’m not a reader. I hate reading.”
I get it. I’ve been there. But that’s a lie the enemy wants you to believe to keep you away from the voice of God. The Word isn’t just a book—it’s breath, power, and peace.
Ask God to make you a reader (I did. I hated reading too). Ask Him to give you energy and focus to pursue Him. Start simple—pick up an NASB, NIV, or ESV Bible and read a few verses each day in the same spot, at the same time. Make it a habit, and you’ll never look back.
What does today say about God?
Living Water.
One of my favorite stories in Scripture is Jesus and the woman at the well. Beyond the cultural barriers—a Jewish man speaking with a Samaritan woman at an unusual hour of collecting water—Jesus reveals to her the true source of life: Himself.
He says, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.”
Are you tired of beginning and ending your days thirsty for something more? Go to Him. The Living Word gives living water—enough for every soul on earth.
What a Father. What a King. What a Provider and Friend.
Thank You, Jesus.
